Hyperion Fund FCR Reaches €53 Million in its First Closing, Five Months After Launch

It has exceeded forecasts in a challenging environment for venture capital investment, with half of the capital provided by Family Offices and the other half by national and international companies in the security, energy, telecommunications, infrastructure, and mobility sectors.

The second closing is scheduled for next quarter and will provide the venture capital fund with sufficient capital to begin building its target portfolio of 15 companies, with a maximum investment period of five years.

The closure coincides with the visit to Madrid of a member of its advisory committee, former NATO Secretary General Anders F. Rasmussen, as well as the participation of the Hyperion team at its Copenhagen conference in support of Ukraine, attended by the European Commission President Ursula Von Der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel.

Madrid, 18 June 2024.

Hyperion Fund FCR was approved by the Spanish Securities Market Commission (CNMV) on 19 January and has already secured investment commitments of more than €53 million, representing 35% of its target size. The fund is therefore beginning its investment phase with a highly advanced portfolio of analysed companies.

With a target size of €150 million, it is the first private equity fund in Europe dedicated to investing in growth-stage companies in the aerospace, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and dual-use technology sectors.

These dual-use technologies are a cornerstone of European defence strategy, critical infrastructure security and technological sovereignty. Traditionally, they originated in the military sphere (GPS, the internet, lasers, infrared, microwaves, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, batteries, etc.), but increasingly they are civilian innovations (drones, satellites, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, etc.) that will be promoted through international security programmes.

Hyperion Fund FCR is managed by Singular Asset Management SGIIC, with Nortia Investment Holding serving as its anchor investor. The investment team is made up of experts in security and industrial defence, including Joaquín Ortiz Escobar and José Antonio Bartrina Giménez; specialists in geostrategy and international relations, such as Pablo Casado Blanco; and professionals in finance and investment, including Ricardo Gómez-Acebo Botín and Daniel Lorrain, who serves as Principal. Its international advisory committee includes former Prime Minister of Denmark Anders F. Rasmussen, former US Under Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky, former French Foreign Minister M. Aliot, and experts and investors such as Robert Murray, Martin Varsavsky, Ilan Leiferman, Nicole Junkerman and Richard Hurowitz.

The geostrategic environment reinforces Hyperion’s investment thesis and the need to support industrial companies developing deep technologies for the security sector. The Hyperion team’s experience supports these companies in their international expansion and boosts the competitiveness of their products in other sectors of activity.
